today at the grocery store. . .

I was feeling friendly. Usually I hide behind my husband or hope a shy smile will satisfy oohing baby-watchers. But today I introduced myself to some neighbors we see all the time and gabbed to any stranger who murmured a quiet "cute" or turned with an "awww" as they shuffled by.

One woman oohed over Kitten baby, asking how old he was and telling me about her sister and daughter and their babies. She said her sister had big babies and that since her sister was larger than her, she expected her to have big babies. Like mine.

Ouch.

But, yeah, okay.

I thought about pointing out that a mom's size doesn't predicate her baby's size, but I didn't. I let it go.

She asked if this was my first--a question I often get because I go shopping with the hubs and he takes care of the kid as he runs around the store. I pointed out Kidoodle and Skedaddle over by the bananas, and mentioned that Kidoodle and I are having fun during our days with Kitten baby, even though sometimes the two year old needs more attention and I'm impatient.

This woman offered a final word of advice about our situation. She had it right on. "Bite your tongue and pick your battles." Yup!

Sheesh...the things strangers will say. It reminds me of this great short story about older women who say "enjoy this time". You should read it; I don't think you'll regret it, as it's quite pertinent to our situations right now.
